Unsafe Busbar Link Inside Consumer Unit? (BS 7671 Explained)
During a recent fuse board upgrade in Acton, London, we found a consumer unit where a section of busbar appears to be unsupported and not properly secured or terminated as intended by the manufacturer. It looks like a section of busbar has been used as a link between two devices instead of using the manufacturer’s approved connection kit.
This may lead to loose connections, increased contact resistance, overheating, arcing, damage to the RCCB terminals, and a potential fire risk if not installed correctly.
Whether you’re considering a consumer unit replacement or comparing fuse box replacement costs, it’s essential that every fuse board upgrade is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and BS 7671.

Case Study: Consumer Unit Replacement in Kingston
What we found:
The existing consumer unit had never been certified and had been modified by a third party rather than the original manufacturer. The enclosure was plastic, not fire-rated, and had no IP rating. It used older Type AC RCDs with no surge protection device (SPD), and one full side of the board — supplying socket outlets and the electric shower — had no RCD protection at all.
The risk:
An unprotected circuit like this means a fault on the shower or sockets wouldn’t trip safely — increasing the risk of electric shock or fire. This is exactly the kind of finding that results in a C1 or C2 code on an EICR report.
What we installed:
We replaced it with a modern consumer unit in a fire-rated metal enclosure, fitted with Type A RCBOs on every circuit and a surge protection device (SPD) — fully compliant with BS 7671.
